All programmes use a credit system (CBCS) culminating in a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) that combines course credits, research credits, and thesis credits (converting percentage to grade points as 91%-100% = 10, 81%-90% = 9, etc.). For coursework, one credit is equivalent to a minimum of 9 contact hours.

MSc
Students must take courses and undertake research work leading to a project report to be submitted for evaluation.

I-PhD:
Students who have been recruited after a 3-year degree program that awards a Bachelor’s degree, or after a Master’s degree in a non-biology discipline, must take courses and undertake research work leading to a thesis to be submitted for evaluation. Students are required to accrue 82 credits: a minimum of 28 credits in coursework, 24 research credits, and 30 credits for the thesis which is evaluated by the University. 
Students who have been recruited after a 4-year degree programme that awards a “Bachelor’s degree” including B.Tech., B.E., B.V.Sc. B.Pharma, B.Sc. (4 year course) are required to accrue 78 credits: a minimum of 24 credits in coursework, 24 research credits, and 30 credits for the thesis which is evaluated by the University.

PhD
Students must take courses and undertake research work leading to a thesis to be submitted for evaluation. Students are required to accrue 70 credits: a minimum of 20 credits in coursework, 20 research credits, and 30 credits for the thesis which is evaluated by the University.
Biology courses offered in any of our Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad campuses may be taken for credit. Additionally, specific courses at TIFR Centers or other outside institutions may also be taken for credit, if approved by the Course Coordinator or Head Academics at each campus.
