Abstract

Some of the most unique and iconic wildlife assemblages are found in grasslands and savannas across the world. Of these, large herbivores play an especially important role in regulating the structure and functioning of grasslands. This chapter first discusses how large mammalian herbivores influence grassland structure and function and how these effects vary along environmental gradients and with herbivore body size. Next, it discusses the predominant challenges facing conservation of vertebrate wildlife in grasslands, in particular highlighting the role of land-use changes due to agricultural expansion, afforestation for climate mitigation, and population declines due to hunting and climate change.
