The NCBS Fellows program is intended to attract the brightest and most enthusiastic visiting scientists’ at all postdoctoral levels to work in a laboratory at NCBS (www.ncbs.res.in). NCBS Fellows are expected to play leading scientific roles in the laboratory of their hosts and in NCBS as a whole. Their research projects will be in close collaboration with those of their hosts and stimulate interactions within and outside the NCBS community. The host laboratory at NCBS will provide resources and space, with the possibility of additional support, as needed.  Fellows may also choose to hold a part of their Fellowship in laboratories outside NCBS for collaborative work and training in skills relevant to their program of research. Resources will be raised in coordination with the NCBS mentor and the collaborative laboratory and the period of stay in the institution outside of NCBS will be similarly decided.

The tenure of the NCBS fellow will be for a maximum of 5 years. There will be a rigorous evaluation towards the end of the second year. Upon a positive evaluation, a contract for the remaining three-year period will be given. Otherwise, a one-year contract will be awarded. The tenure will therefore be for a 2+1 or 2+3 year period.

The Personal support awarded via these fellowships will be competitive, commensurate with the Fellows’ research experience and will include a house-rent allowance. NCBS Fellows may be eligible for sponsorship by NCBS for the award of a range of external competitive fellowships from other agencies. If awarded such external support, the term of the NCBS Fellow is not expected to be beyond a total period of 5 years at NCBS.

The scheme is open to candidates who are typically within 4 years of completing their PhD and capable of clearly articulating their scientific interests and directions.

Potential NCBS fellows will identify the laboratory with which they would like to be associated in preliminary discussions with the host faculty member. Once both the host faculty member and the candidate agree an application can be submitted to the Head Academics. The application should be submitted as one PDF file to sarina  at ncbs dot res dot in. The subject line should clearly state “Application to the NCBS Fellows Program”.

  • The application should be written as a research proposal in the following format:
  • Title (100 words)
  • Key words (5)
  • Summary(250 words)
  • Background (1 Page)
  • Aims (half a page)
  • Research outline and methodology (elaborating on each of the aims, 3 pages)
  • Annexures (relevant background material, figures, any details of methodology that will be of use to the reviewers: No more than 3 pages)
  • Reference list
  • Brief CV of the applicant.
  • Three letters of recommendation including one from the PhD supervisor and another from the head of the host laboratory with whom the proposal has been developed and all submitted directly to Head Academics. The applicant is responsible for timely arrival of the letters.

There will be two rounds of evaluation each year. The deadline for submitting applications are March 31 and September 30 each year. A committee appointed by the Head Academics and the Dean will evaluate applications soon after the deadline. Short-listed candidates will be invited to visit NCBS for a seminar and to meet with faculty and committee members will have this part of the process coordinated by the office of the Head Academics. The decision of the evaluation committee will be communicated before end-May or end-November for each funding cycle.
