On ways of seeing an image

Abstract:

This lecture is about new ways of looking at the old, ways of making the familiar unfamiliar, and then familiar again. It will endeavor to unravel the skeins of cultural assumptions that accompany objects from the moment of their creation and through the history of their lives, via formal analysis, multiple narratives that accompany well-known objects – sculptures in our instance, and evaluations of their context over time. Themes of representation and intention will journey alongside, for a more nuanced way of looking.
