POST DOCTORAL/VISITING FELLOWS PROGRAM

The Postdoctoral or Visiting Fellows Program at NCBS seeks to attract fresh talented graduates within the country and outside as well as individuals with post doctoral experience to our laboratories at NCBS. Applications to this Program are accepted year around with appointments typically activated in August each year. The following are the categories of postdoctoral fellows at NCBS:

NCBS funding A restricted number of Postdoctoral Fellowships are available at NCBS. Applications to this program undergo a preliminary screen to ascertain interest in a host laboratory[s]. Following this, applicants are required to give a seminar describing the research undertaken during their PhD and meet with the members of the NCBS Post Doctoral Committee and host laboratory. Candidates located outside India are required to present their work to the Post Doctoral Committee and selected specialists via Video Conference or Skype. Selections to this program are made by the Post Doctoral Committee and are based on the seminar, referee letters and inputs from the host laboratory and other faculty at NCBS. This fellowship is typically only offered for a year and Fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding for subsequent years of stay at NCBS. NCBS covers differences in salary if any, incurred by this transition for the residual period of stay of postdoctoral fellows originally selected into the program. Application forms for this Fellowship may be downloaded from this site

External Funding
Candidates supported by funding from the Department of Biotechnology-Postdoctoral Program, Department of Science & Technology-Fast Track Program or any other external agency should apply directly to a host laboratory at NCBS. Appointments via this track are made by the host laboratory in consultation with members of the Post Doctoral Committee through a formal seminar or informal meetings.

Funding on PI grants NCBS faculty may offer postdoctoral positions on Grants via direct advertisements. Appointments to this track are made by the head of the laboratory and candidates should apply directly to the host laboratory.

All Postdoctoral fellows enjoy the same rights and privileges. Renewals and extensions on all the aforementioned tracks are decided by the Post Doctoral Committee.

Renewals & Extensions

Postdoctoral fellows on NCBS fellowships may be extended for an additional year on the same fellowship after review by the Post Doctoral Committee. Extensions for a third year on this fellowship are extremely rare.

All renewals or requests for extensions (regardless of the category of appointment) are decided by the Post Doctoral Committee. The committee bases its decisions on the submission of a work report by the Fellow, the Annual Work Seminar and independent assessments provided by the laboratory head and one other member of the Faculty at NCBS, who may also be a member of the Post Doctoral Committee. The renewal package is expected to reach the Academic Office by July 1st of each year. Renewals and new appointments are made by August 1st every year.
